When you think of the best or the right position for meditation, it’s common to imagine someone sat cross legged, on the floor, straight backed and looking perfectly comfortable.

However, in reality you can meditate wherever you are comfortable and not at risk of falling asleep (curled up on the sofa).

Generally the ideal position for meditation is one in which your back is straight, you can be sat on the floor, on the sofa, in a chair or on your bed. Where you sit is up to you, however you should aim to sit without sloughing.

The reason for keeping a straight back is that it helps remain aware and focused during your meditation. When we lie down or slouch we can drift off or impair our breathing.

In some cases it may be uncomfortable to cross your legs, sit on a hard floor or sit with your back unsupported. This is all OK. Meditation is a practice that can adapt to our needs, so you can always lean against the back of a chair or a wall, or sit on a cushion.

6 WAYS TO SIT FOR MEDITATION:

1. CROSS LEGGED

The most common position for meditation is to sit cross legged.

This mediation position allows you to sit comfortably, with a straight back and your hands in your lap.

For some it isn’t too taxing to sit in this position for long periods of time, however others find it uncomfortable on the knees, back or bum. If this is the case you can try on of the meditation positions below:

2. IN A CHAIR

Sitting in a chair to meditate is not only comfortable and easy, it’s also available to us almost everywhere we go.

Whether we are at home, in our car (not while driving), at work, or on a flight, we normally have access to a chair of some kind.

In this position, place your feet firmly on the ground, keep your back straight, and place your hands on your legs or in your lap.

3. AGAINST A WALL

if you’re finding that sitting in the middle of the floor is uncomfortable an uncomfortable position for your mediation, you can always put your back against a wall for support.

In this position you can either cross your legs or lay them out in front of you; whatever you feel comfortable with.

4. ON A CUSHION

The humble cushion; used throughout history to protect our behind from the harshness of hard surfaces. Your meditation should feel comfortable, so the use of a cushion is a very common way to achieve the comfort needed for proper attention and focus.

Using a cushion to get the right level of comfort for your meditation position is so common that there are specific meditation cushions on sale all over the place.

WHAT POSITION IS RIGHT FOR YOUR MEDITATION?

The answer to this question is simple: The one that works for you.

Whether you’re a chair meditator, or a floor lover, the right answer is up to you. As long as you feel comfortable enough to sit for a while and remained focused and aware it doesn’t matter where you are or how you’re sat.

I hope this helps.
